"Get to Know God as Father"
“This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Matthew 6: 9 NIV
In the Old Testament God is called “Father” only seven times. People didn’t think of Him as Father. They thought of Him as all other kinds of things – creator, the almighty one, etc.
They didn’t think of God as Father, until Jesus came along and said that we should pray to Our Father. Jesus uses that expression more than 150 times.
What’s He doing by calling Him Father? He’s exploding all the stereotypes. People thought of God as a tyrant, cosmic cop, a universal kill-joy and even an impersonal force. Jesus presents God to us as Father, or as He prefers to call Him, Daddy.
God is a personal God. He has the ability to have a relationship with us. He created us with the ability to have a relationship with Him.
Here’s the problem: a lot of us have had fathers who are not like Him. Some even made life on earth hell. They could be fickle, moody, abusive, controlling and violent. When we say to pray to God as Father, for some people, that evokes a negative image.
Perhaps you had a dad who was unreliable or unreasonable. When you talk about God as Father you might think He is just like them. Is it any wonder that you have a tough time relating to Him as Father?
We can’t change the images that you lived with earlier in life. If you see Our Father in heaven in that way you will be disconnected from God. But there is hope. When you really know Him you’re going to love Him because He really loves you.
Peace in the Lord,
