"Love Drives Out Fear
in Your Relationships"

“Love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear.  If we are afraid, it … shows that we have not fully experienced His perfect love.”  1 John 4: 18 NLT

Ever had anybody, in the midst of a fight, say to you, “I hate you!”  How does it feel?  How do you want to react?

Before you scream back at them, think about this.  It’s often a sign that somebody is trying to control somebody else.  What’s beneath that control?  It’s a primary emotion, fear.

Insecurity causes you to try to control others or resist their control.  When you’re insecure the only thing you can think about is what others are thinking about you.  That’s just not the way you want to live.

Insecure people can’t develop intimacy.  It’s hard for them to maintain relationships because they’re always afraid.  When people are afraid they don’t allow themselves to be known.

So what builds up a relationship?  Love.  In fact our verse for today reminds us that, “Love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear.”  How does that work?

Well, it’s really pretty simple.  Love puts the focus on you from my perspective.  When I’m looking out for you and concerned about you, I have to be less concerned for myself and what I’m afraid of.  When I think about how much love I have for all of you, I have nothing to be afraid of.

The same is true of any relationship.  When you realize how much God loves you and that other person, you don’t need to be afraid.  His love can help you overcome any fear you have and enable you to establish a good, healthy relationship, built on His love.

Peace in the Lord,
