"Pride Destroys Relationships;
Humility Builds Them Up!"
“Be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves.” Philippians 2: 3b NCV
Pride destroys relationships. Sometimes it’s not about saying you’re better than someone. Instead, you’re critical of them, competitive with them, stubborn about them and are very superficial in that relationship.
The big problem with pride is that it’s self-deceiving. Everybody else sees it in you. You can’t see it.
So what’s the antidote to pride? Humility. A kind of loose translation of Romans 12: 8 is, Don’t think you’re better than anybody else. Humility builds relationships. It leads you to be compassionate and caring towards other people.
How are you going to grow in humility? Begin by letting Jesus control your thoughts, heart, attitudes and reactions. It’s the only way you can really grow in humility.
When you allow Jesus to control your life you become a new person. You think differently about people and you especially about them as people. You no longer see them as objects to be used to gain what you want, but as people to help grow in their own faith.
The more time you spend with Jesus in prayer, meditation and Bible reading, the more humble you’ll learn to be. You see no one has done anything more humble than Jesus. St. Paul says in Philippians that He “humbled Himself unto death, even death on the cross.” I know I haven’t done that. I doubt that you have either.
Peace in the Lord,
