"When You're Selfless You
Bring Out the Best in Others"
“The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others – ignoring God! – harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds. But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7 – 8 MSG
I doubt this surprises you. Selfishness destroys relationships. It causes conflict, arguments, divorce and even war. James warns us that the battles that start in lives come from within. At there core is our self-centeredness. It’s incredibly easy to let selfishness creep into relationships.
When you first start a relationship you try to be unselfish. As time goes on the real nature that lives inside of us rears it’s ugly head. We tend to put more energy into beginning relationships than we do into maintaining them.
On the other hand, selfLESSness makes relationships grow. You may not be familiar with that word but just think about it. It means I have less of “me” and more of “you.” I think more about you than I do about myself.
Selflessness brings out the best in others. It builds trust in relationships and creates a similar response with those with whom we share it. It’s almost as if, when you sow selflessness by living that way, you also reap it.
When that happens it’s actually God working in your life and the lives of those with whom you’re being selfless. He wants you and me to become more like Him. God is not just unselfish, God is love. Love is never self-centered or selfish. It always wants to share and be shared.
Peace in the Lord,
