"You Can Get Well or Get Even"
“When he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to Him who judges justly.” 1 Peter 2: 23b LB
If you've been hurt by a person, you have a decision that has to be made. You can either use your energy to get well or get even. You can’t do both.
Just imagine how hard that decision must have been for Jesus. He was wounded in so many ways: physical, mental, spiritual and emotional. The emotional was perhaps the greatest. He was betrayed, rejected and humiliated.
Yet, even in the face of that, he made a decision to ask His Father to forgive rather than to curse. He refuses to let the pain of the cross make Him bitter.
The Gospels encourage us to be like Jesus, to follow His example in letting go of our bitterness and release those who abused us. By doing that we’re not saying that it’s OK. Just that we don’t choose to get even.
Does the person who hurt you deserve your forgiveness? No! On the other hand, do you deserve God’s forgiveness? You offer forgiveness not for them to be off the hook but for you to be free from the burden of it.
God knows what has happened to you. Our job is not to seek revenge but to commit people to God’s judgment. Remember, resentment is a poison pill you don’t need to swallow. You are only as happy as you choose to be. So what’s your choice?
Peace in the Lord,
