"Don't Just Read It - Receive God's Word"
“So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked contact. Submit to God and accept the Word that He plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.” James 1: 21 TEV
What’s the difference between reading God’s Word and receiving it? You might read it and see the words but you don’t really take them into your heart.
Receiving God’s Word means that you listen with an open, receptive attitude and accept it. The parable of the sower illustrates how our receptiveness determines whether or not God’s Word takes root in your life and bears fruit.
Jesus identified 3 unreceptive attitudes – a closed mind (hard soil), a superficial mind (shallow soil), a distracted mind (soil with weeds). Then He said, “Consider carefully how you listen.” Luke 8: 18a NIV
Sometimes people say, “I’m just not being fed” to a pastor. What they think they’re saying is that he’s not giving them stuff to chew on. But they really may be saying something entirely different.
What they may really be admitting is their own sin; that they are not listening with an open, receptive attitude. The issue isn’t how entertaining the preacher can be, but rather how much you’re willing to open yourself up to the presence and power of God’s Word and Spirit. That’s what saves you.
When you read and receive the Word it’s best. In that way, you’re taking it in and allowing it to work in you so that you can be the best disciple you can be.
Peace in the Lord,
