"Get to Know God as Father"
“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be your name.’” Matthew 6: 9 NIV
In the thousands of years covered by the Old Testament, God is only called “Father” seven times. They had lots of other names for Him, but Father was pretty unique.
But when Jesus comes along He keeps on reminding us about our Father. He uses that name more than 150 times in the New Testament.
So what’s Jesus doing? Well a lot of people in the Old Testament saw God as angry or an impersonal force. God is neither of those. He is a dad who wants to live in relationship with us. He created us to live in relationship with Him.
The only problem is that for some people the word “father” is a negative term. It brings up all sorts of bad memories about pain, hurt, abandonment and, perhaps, abuse. For people like that talking to God as Father is pretty difficult.
We sometimes confuse things. We think our Heavenly Father is like our earthly fathers. The truth is God wants our earthly fathers to be like Him. The current generation raising children seems to be closer to that model. That will be a great blessing to the dads and to the children.
Perhaps, just perhaps, it may erase some of those negative connotations so that children growing up, when they hear about their Heavenly Father, won’t have to deal with sadness.
For those who are still struggling, I encourage you to turn to your Heavenly Father and learn of His love and care for you. It will help to heal you and restore you.
Peace in the Lord,
