"Why Should You Forgive?"
“The servant’s master took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go.” Matthew 18: 27
We’ve been talking about God forgiving us. Today we talk about why we should forgive others. The first, and most important, reason why we should forgive others is because God commands us to. By forgiving we release hurt and resentment.
Here are three reasons we need to forgive:
1. BECAUSE GOD FORGIVES – Our verse comes from the story of the man who owed his master so much he could never have possibly paid him back. Rather than condemning him and his family to prison, his master forgave him wholly. That’s why God sent Jesus into the world so that He could forgive us wholly. He took on our sin and cancelled it all.
2. BECAUSE RESENTMENT IS SELF-TORTURE – Resentment is self-inflicted torture. It always hurts us more than the person we’re resenting. It causes us to focus on the person we want to get even with, perhaps for years. They may have forgotten what happened but we hold onto it.
3. BECAUSE YOU NEED FORGIVENESS EVERY DAY – The Bible very clearly teaches that we cannot receive what we are unwilling to give. Do you really want to be forgiven? Then you know what you need to do. We often think forgiveness is an event. Somebody does something to us we forgive them. Forgiveness is a lifestyle. Every day you’re going to run into somebody who needs forgiveness.
Every day God wants you to forgive them. Every day you’ve got to accept forgiveness from God. As you accept it, don’t forget to offer it. In God’s view, forgiveness is an ongoing effort by us to live in this world together, as He wants us to.
