"For the Beauty of the Earth"
“Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.” (Habakkuk 3:2a NIV)
Have you ever stood at the top of a mountain and looked out over creation? To think that God planned each and every tree, blade of grass, bird in the sky, and creature upon the ground is breath taking. We are fortunate enough to live in such a beautiful example of His work, the Finger Lakes. You don’t have to go far to admire God’s handy work.
One of my favorite places to visit is my Uncle Steve’s home on the West side of Keuka Lake. It is 100 plus acres of woods at the top of a large hill overlooking the lake with a stream running down one border of the property heading toward the lake.
We used to hike the trails through the woods and follow the creek to the other end of his property and then back up the road to his house. My favorite part of this hike was when we got back out to the road we could look out over the vineyard down the road and the lake and see the hills on the other side. What a beautiful landscape God created.
Unfortunately, as I’ve gotten older and started a family, I have not had the time to go hike those woods and see that view. Life gets busy and we forget to admire the beauty around us. For some it is work, others family. For me it took the death of my Uncle Steve to remind me to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation once more. My uncle had a saying, “when I grow weary, I go to the woods.” For him the woods were where he went to be with God, among His creation.
Even amidst the chaos of life, we must find time to admire what God has made for us. For the beauty of the Earth was His design and it was for us that He made it with His own hands. May we enjoy every minute, and admire every inch.
Peace in the Lord,
