"Prepare Your Heart for Good Reception"

“Faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.” Romans 10: 17 NIV

If you’re a gardener you know this experience. You take seeds from a packet, plant them in three different locations in your garden and get three different results. What causes that? Of course, the only thing that’s different is the soil.

The same is true when you hear God’s Word. That’s why you can take two people to church, set them side by side listening to the same sermon and worship service and each of them will have a different opinion of both. The heart of the one person was prepared; the other’s was not.

Your heart has to be prepared for the Word. If you get up late, have trouble finding a parking spot and are irritated as you rush into church, you’re probably not going to hear God’s voice very well. You’re not in a receptive mood.

For good reception, adopt these four attitudes:

Be quiet - If you’re talking to others when you should be listening to God, you won’t hear Him clearly.

Be calm - You can’t rush God. He needs quiet in you for you to hear Him.

Be clean - Before you can meet God you need to take out some emotional and spiritual garbage. Get rid of the stuff that stinks in your life by confessing your sins and agreeing with Him that what you did was wrong.

Be humble - Be ready to do what God tells you from His Word. A prideful attitude won’t make you receptive. It may be your biggest roadblock to fellowship of God.

With the right attitude, you’ll be more receptive and grow in faith more readily.

Peace in the Lord,

Pastor Don
