"You Don't Need a Plan.
You Need An 'I Am.'"
“When they saw Him walking on the lake, they thought He was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke to them and said, ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’” Mark 6: 49 – 50 NIV
Here’s a truth: You really learn about Jesus in the storms of life. He’s not just a man, a teacher or an ethical leader. He’s God, the creator of the universe. He has power.
When Jesus noticed the disciples were in distress on the lake as the wind and waves pounded them, keeping them from making any progress. He walked up to them on the water. Our reading tells us they were terrified. They thought He was a ghost.
Here was the problem. They doubted Him. They really didn’t know who He was. They thought He was some prophet who could do miracles. By walking on the water Jesus revealed He was more than a man. He was showing them He was God.
The phrase that is translated “it is I” comes from the Greek, “I Am.” We know who “I Am” is. It’s the name of God. So Jesus was telling them who He was so they would not be afraid.
He was telling them that they didn’t need a plan or anything else. What they needed was Him. So if you’re going through a storm remember that. What you need is “I Am.”
