"Why Your Way Isn't Working"

“When [Jesus] had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’  Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything because you say so, I will let down the nets.’”  Luke 5: 4 – 5 NIV

Just imagine if you’ve been fishing most of your life, came up empty and then had this “guy” get into your boat, preach a sermon and then tell you to do some more fishing.  It would be pretty hard to admit that you’d already failed at it.

Sometimes, our best is not good enough.  Sometimes, there are situations that are out of our control.  You can’t control the economy or a lot of things in life.  You may have tried but it didn’t work.

What do you need to do?  First, you need to let Jesus in your boat.  Let Him be the center.  Second, you need to admit that your way isn’t working.  The Bible calls it confession.  It can be tough to do.

Why is it so hard to admit it isn’t working?

Pride – You’re competent.  You don’t want people to think you can’t handle it.  If you’re in charge you’re supposed to have it all together.  You’re supposed to handle it.

Stubbornness – You’ve always done it this way.  You don’t want to change it.  Do you know that the greatest enemy of tomorrow’s success is yesterday’s success?

Fear – You don’t want to admit that you’ve caught nothing.  You’re afraid what people will think.  You’re afraid to let Jesus in your boat because of where He might take you.

So, if you’re doing your best in your job, but you don’t seem to have much to show for it, let go of your pride, stubbornness and fear.  See how Jesus can take your boat and fill it to overflowing.

Peace in the Lord,

Pastor Don
