"Short-term Thinking Keeps You
from Seeing Clearly"
“His followers discussed the meaning of this, saying, ‘He said this because we have no bread.’ Knowing what they were talking about, Jesus asked them, ‘Why are you talking about not having bread? Do you not see or understand? Are your minds closed?’” Mark 8: 16 – 17
We miss what God is doing in our lives when we remain focused on the here and now. God has a much bigger plan for us. We tend to think that what God wants us to have is comfort. What He really wants us to have is character. We think about happiness; God thinks about holiness.
That’s what happened with the disciples. Jesus was trying to teach them a lesson by using yeast as a metaphor. They thought He was still talking about the take-out lunch. He was talking about maturity; they were thinking next meal. That’s short-term thinking.
Short-term thinking keeps us from seeing how God is working in our lives. Unfortunately, that’s one of the real weaknesses of our American culture. We don’t tend to think long-term. What we’re doing is robbing the future to enjoy today. You understand that perfectly if you have credit card debt.
Whenever you’re thinking short-term, you can’t see what God is doing in your life. You’ll miss out on His long-term plans to build your character if you’re only thinking about comfort.
What do you do? Ask God to give you a glimpse into eternity and to help you see the hope you can have when you see His long-term plan. Once you’ve done that, obey the plan.
Peace in the Lord,
