"The Problem with Stuff"
“What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” Matthew 16: 26 NLT
Life is getting more and more complicated. On top of that we keep on adding more stuff. The problem with stuff is the more you have, the more it takes to take care of it all. You have to clean it, sort it, protect it, insure it and repair it.
Pretty soon stuff can dominate your life. I’m willing to make a bet with you. You have more stuff than your parents had. I'll bet that because years ago personal storage places didn’t exist.
A lot of people think the whole point of life is to collect as much stuff as you can. But life is not about things. God didn’t design you that way. You were never meant to keep collecting stuff.
Rick Warren sent out a twitter recently, “When + then thinking is a lie.” In good Lutheran fashion we ask, what does this mean: “When I get what I want, then I’ll be happy.” It's simply not true!
How much stuff do you think you need to be happy? When does stuff weigh you down and make you unhappy? Jesus modeled a pretty simple life. He spent His time on relationships rather than stuff.
Perhaps that’s a good example for all of us.
Peace in the Lord,
