"Your Commitment to Shape Your Life"
“Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives we should be living.” 2 Peter 3: 11 TLB
Just as the disciples didn’t understand all of the implications of their decision when they chose to follow Jesus, you don’t need to either. He’ll make it clear as you go along. The thing you need to decide now is to follow.
Your commitments shape your life more than anything else. They can help you to develop or they can destroy you, but either way, they will define you. Look at what you’re committed to and you’ll know where you will be in twenty years, because you become whatever you’re committed to.
This is where people sometimes back away from Jesus. They’re afraid of commitments and they just back away from them, drifting through life. Often times, they wonder what on earth they’re here for.
Others make half-hearted commitments to competing values, which leads to frustration and mediocrity. Still others, just jump whole hog into the goals of the world like getting rich, becoming famous. Unfortunately, those things can disappear just as quickly as they appear.
What few of us take into account is that every choice has eternal consequences, so we want to choose wisely. As our verse says, eventually this is all going to be gone. The only thing that will exist is the character we have developed and the commitments we have made, which will get us to heaven.
Christ-likeness comes from making Christ-like commitments.
Peace in the Lord,
P.S.: The devotion will be on vacation July 4th. Join us again on July 5th for a special treat.
