The Festival of the Epiphany of our Lord
"Don't Wait to Obey God"
“I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.” Psalm 119: 60 NIV
Today is Epiphany, the day we set to commemorate the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus. One of the almost forgotten people in the Christmas story is Joseph. Yet, his obedience is a key to understanding the Christ event. This week we’re going to focus on obedience and how to live it out.
I want to look at five actions Joseph took that showed his obedience to God. The first is when Joseph questioned taking Mary as his wife. An angel told him that everything was ok and he should do it.
That’s exactly what he did. There is a refreshing immediacy to Joseph’s relationship with God. When God said it, Joseph did it.
God wants us to exhibit the same type of relationship. If you believe God loves you and you want to live a life of obedience to His love, then following Joseph’s example is a good thing.
Throughout my life I have had the opportunity to meet people of great faith. One thing they shared in common, although they are very different in other ways, is their obedience. When they sense God saying to do something they don’t hesitate, they step out and do it.
1 John 5: 3 reminds us, “This is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome.” When you do what God says, the most refreshing freedom will come into your life. Because of that it will not be a burden.
Peace in the Lord,
