"Obey God by using Your Brain"
“When Joseph heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.”
Matthew 2: 22 – 23a NIV
A lot of people think that trusting God means you put your brain in neutral and never use it. That’s not the truth at all. God gave you a brain and He wants you to use it.
That’s exactly what Joseph did when he obeyed God’s command to move back to Israel. He heard that Herod’s son was reigning in Judea so he was afraid to go there. God gave him a warning in a dream and once again he listened to it.
That got Jesus right where He was supposed to be. That probably doesn’t surprise you, does it? I don’t exactly know what Joseph knew or didn’t know about the prophets, but it really doesn’t matter. His obedience took him to the center of God’s will.
Now, we might not have angels showing up but we do have a guide for our lives. It’s called the Bible. It has lots of things it says to us about being obedient to God and how to know what His will is.
Jesus talked about this in Matthew 7: 24: “So then, anyone who hears these words and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on a rock.” (TEV) You remember that the other guy built his house on sand and you know what happened then.
So which will you be: the one who builds on the rock or on the sand? I hope you’ll choose the rock because you’ve read God’s love letter to you.
He has shown us how to live and He wants to give us the kind of life that will help us to do that.
Peace in the Lord,
