"Show You Believe by Belonging"

“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13: 35 NLT

The Bible says a Christian without a church home is like an organ without a body, a sheep without a flock or a child without a family.  It’s an unnatural state.  Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2: 19b, “You belong in God’s household with every other Christian.”

We live in this time of independent individualism which unfortunately, has created spiritual orphans.  These are “bunny believers,” who hop around from one church to another without any identity, accountability or commitment.  Some even believe you don’t need to join or attend a local church to be a Christian, but that would be contrary to God’s will.

How important is the church to God the Father?  He sent His Son into the world to die for it.  Ephesians 5: 25 says, “Christ loved the church and gave His life for it.”  You don’t die for something which isn’t important.

With just a few important exceptions, every time the Bible uses the word Church it refers to a local, visible congregation.  The New Testament assumes membership in a local congregation.  The only time you weren’t a member of a church was when you had been removed because of gross public sin.

The Bible offers many compelling reasons why you need to be committed and active in a local fellowship.  It identifies you as a genuine believer.  Jesus said, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”  John 13: 35

When we come together in love as a church family from different backgrounds, race and social status, it is a witness to the world.  St. John even implies that in the 21st chapter of his gospel when he talks about the 153 fish in the net.

Patristic tradition taught that that there were 153 different species of fish in the world so John was giving us a symbol that the whole world will come to Jesus.  The net did not break because Jesus will lose no one.

Peace in the Lord,
