"If You Want to Change,
Start with Your Thinking"
“Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”
Ephesians 4: 23 NLT
Where do you start when you want to change. Yesterday, I said you have to make a choice. Before you make that choice you want to think and pray about it. That’s where all change originates, in our thoughts and prayers.
Very rarely does anyone begin by changing an action. We think it through and hopefully pray about it. We consider the possibilities and then take that giant leap of faith.
A lot of times feelings get in our way of change. We’ve been hurt or hurt someone else and the feelings are raw. By thinking and praying you can begin to deal with those feelings so that you begin to make the change you want to make.
The Bible talks about renewing your spirit and mind. Most renewal starts with the word “repentance.” Some people think that’s a dirty word. The image we have is the crazy guy, standing on the corner yelling “Repent, for the world’s about to end.”
Repentance is really about more than changing your behavior. It’s about learning to think differently. Repent simply means to make a mental U-turn. You need to turn around and go back the way you were, back to God and back to the relationship that has broken.
That lets us turn from guilt to forgiveness, frustration to freedom, darkness to light and hatred and bitterness to love. Sometimes we struggle because we think God will be mad at us for the things we’ve done. God loves us despite what we do. He always has and He always will.
You can repent because God is offering you that opportunity. Changing the way you think will then affect your emotions and your behavior.
Peace in the Lord,
