"Come As You Are This Easter"
“He will send down help from heaven to save me because of His love.” Psalm 57: 3a TLB
There is a myth I've heard many times in life. People say it in different ways, but it boils down to this: “Pastor, when I get my life cleaned up, I’m going to come to church.”
I think some people think it’s like brushing your teeth before you go to the dentist. You want to impress him that you’ve been caring for your teeth when you haven’t been flossing at all.
The truth is God doesn’t expect you to clean up your act before you approach Him. Jesus came to show His love for us. As we look at the cross we see Jesus spreading His arms out towards us in love, not telling us we have to clean up our act.
As our verse says, God sent down help from heaven. That’s why we can bring our messes and failures to God because we know He expects us to do that.
It’s really sad that there are people who think God can’t accept them unless they get cleaned up. You can have a great impact on them. Let them know that it’s not the cleanliness of themselves that will impress God but rather His great love for them invites them to come worship Him.
In a sense, Easter is God’s “come as you are party.” He wants all of us to come with our broken hearts and sinful souls to hear the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. He wants us to be inviting them to do that.
We only have about a week to go. Have you been praying for someone? Have you already extended an invitation?
Peace in the Lord,
