"You Don't Have to Forget It"

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8: 28 NIV

I’m pretty sure all of us have heard the phrase “forgive and forget.”  What’s the problem?  You can’t forget.  When you’re trying to forget, you have to think about it and then consciously try to remove it from your brain.  That just keeps you focused on the wrong.

So if you can’t forget it what should you do?  God wants you to trust Him and look for how He can bring good out of what has happened.  That’s really more important than forgetting it, because when you see the good that God brings out of it, you can thank Him.

Now our verse for today is often misunderstood.  It’s not that everything that happens is good.  We all have things that we know are terrible.  The reason for that is really simple, sin.  But no matter what is happening in our lives, God is always working for good.  He wants good for us and brings good to us.

He gives you peace in your heart that comes from knowing that even if you don’t understand the hurt in your life, you can still forgive, knowing that God will use that pain for good.  So the next time someone hurts you, don’t forget it, forgive it and thank God for the good He is seeking to bring out of it.

Peace in the Lord,

Pastor Don
