"You Need God's Power to Change"
“I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does.” Romans 7: 24 – 25 MSG
All of us have areas of our lives that we would like to change. Some have tried to change them time and time again, only to find that we back into the old habits. Some of us view that as failing miserably.
Why do we fail? We can’t change ourselves. If we could, we would. But we can’t, so we won’t and don't.
Sometimes we look at it judgmentally and judge ourselves as being weak on willpower. Willpower can get you through for a little while. It may work for six months. But eventually willpower runs out. We give up and go back.
So what do we need to change? We need a power greater than ourselves. We need God’s power.
Paul understood this. He’s talking about it in our verse for today. Here’s a man that most will proclaim as one of the greatest apostles and he’s saying I couldn’t do it on my own. If he can’t do it how can we possibly expect to?
I know some say that the only one we can change is ourselves, but we don’t often even do that well. We can take a class and it will help. We can start a new relationship and find renewal. We can go get a book from the self-help section, but it may just sit on our desk.
That all changes when we rely on God. We need Jesus to help us change because He came to change the world! He reminds us that if we’ll trust Him He’ll help us to accomplish all things through Him.
Peace in the Lord,
